An Artistic Delimma...

Sat Feb 9, 2008, 2:21 PM
Once again, in my mother...

I'm in college now and am currently going through my second semester. Throughout my first I've completed a crapload of drafting and rendering assignments that have come out beautifully, but they may never be placed onto dA.

Why? Because I have a mother who asks, after every submission I make, "Why do you always put everything you make online?" To her, anything and everything that I put online is instantly stolen. No credit is ever given to whomever makes artistic work and people don't really exist... they're all just inside of a box.

...

She also has a degree in technology, is working on being a certified networker and holds an MBA specialized in technology.

...

Does anyone else see the irony in this picture? e_e

To me, deviantArt is my online portfolio and works that I'm proud of should be put here. To her, though she's not an artist herself, the best way to get exposure to the world is to not do it online.

What would you do in this situation?

Tell her that it isn't your professional work that's going up but your doodles? |3

It's true, too. People assume that Asians are fired from the womb with at least 40 grandfather's worth of acenstral nunchuck knowledge. Bizarre shit. - ~Ithiel
Extremely ironic if you ask me. I see no harm in putting it online. Of course, you run the risk of getting stolen, and while I agree stealing artwork is wrong, I personallity think it's not the greatest problem on earth some people make it out to be. Besides, the good side of putting it online is that you get opinions and critques on it so that you know what you can do to improve in the future.
Show her DeviantArt's copyright policy? Besides, if you get it stolen, as long as you have the original copy, I think you're safe.

You never really do know where your mind is capable of taking you until you let it drift on it's own.
Tell her it's not her business...?

Wow

Just wow.

I wish I could make a suggestion, but I'm afraid I'll say something stupid.

He's right, DA has a policy to officially copyright to their respective owner any works submitted to the DA server the moment they are submitted, any thievery could be argued against with the DA records on file. Find that tad bit of information with the policy and you could be set, furthermore it was created at a college institute so lawfully, your college could also back you up if any theft were to happen. DA, among other sites, is indeed an online portfolio holder, as such they have been made to try and keep art safe with their creators just as much as any insurance company protects someones property. As a computer techy, i agree that the Internet is not very safe, but then again, what is? at least with an online source backing you up with the earliest record of your work, who can prove you not the creator?
on a side note, it sounds like your mother sees the Internet to be unsafe as a belief rather than a rule... could you submit your work without the fear of punishment? have you ever told her how you feel about DA being your online portfolio?

Can you embed a code into the page that prevents copying of any sort,or is that limited to DA Script writers?
